Inside the 7.65-Gigawatt GW Ranch Footprint

According to regulatory filings, the GW Ranch project in the Pecos County area near the Mexican border involves 35 turbines designed for a total capacity of 7.65 gigawatts. Energy industry data indicates this capacity is more than four times the power output of France’s Flamanville EPR nuclear reactor. Permits authorize the facility to release over 30 million tons of greenhouse gases each year. Specialized energy sector analytics firm Cleanview utilized satellite imagery to link the power plant project directly to three data center permits filed by Amazon in the arid region.

Bypassing the Public Grid in Texas

An Amazon spokesperson stated that the project is built to ensure the company pays the full cost of powering its operations without increasing electricity prices for Texas residents. The company also indicated plans to evaluate solar energy additions to the site and utilize non-potable water resources to protect local supplies, all while pursuing its corporate target of reaching net-zero carbon carbon emissions by 2040.

Methane Leaks and Regional Health Concerns

The reliance on dedicated, off-grid fossil fuel generation highlights the unprecedented energy demands of modern data center expansion. While natural gas plants produce lower direct emissions than coal facilities, environmental advocates note that natural gas extraction and transport frequently involve methane leaks—a potent greenhouse gas. Additionally, combustion produces particulate matter and toxic gases, raising regional health concerns as tech firms increasingly deploy dedicated generation units to maintain pace with AI workloads.
