France Allergy Alert: Extreme Pollen Risk Amid Heatwave

France faces high allergy risks across thirteen of its fifteen regions, driven by scorching temperatures and high concentrations of urticaceae and ragweed pollen, according to the national aerobiological monitoring network.

Allergy risk levels reach critical highs across France

A vast majority of French territory is under severe allergy surveillance, with only Corsica and parts of the southeast escaping the highest alert levels. Urticaceae, commonly known as nettles, represent the primary allergen factor, triggering maximum concentrations nationwide except along the southern coast where levels remain moderate. Meanwhile, ragweed (Ambrosia) compounds the respiratory pressure, registering high concentrations in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte-Alpes-Azur. Birch and grass pollens continue to maintain a generalized, moderate baseline presence across all territories, according to aerobiological data.

Heatwave and dry weather accelerate pollen dispersion

Meteorological conditions are supercharging the crisis, as persistent dry weather and daytime temperatures ranging between 33°C and 37°C create optimal environments for pollen release and long-distance transport. The absence of rainfall in the lowlands prevents natural atmospheric cleansing, allowing allergen concentrations to accumulate continuously throughout the day. Relief remains strictly localized to high-altitude reliefs in the Pyrenees, Massif Central, and the Alps, which expect isolated afternoon showers.

Drivers should keep vehicle windows firmly closed and operate air conditioning systems exclusively in recirculation mode. To reduce nighttime exposure, individuals should thoroughly rinse their hair each evening to eliminate trapped pollens before sleeping, and avoid hanging laundry outdoors where airborne particles easily settle on fabrics. Anyone experiencing persistent symptoms should consult a physician or pharmacist to adjust their medication regimen as the intense heatwave persists.
