The Música en la Montaña Palentina festival returned for its second edition on Saturday at the Virgen del Llano beach in Aguilar de Campoo, drawing thousands of attendees to the Aguilar reservoir for an open-air concert series, according to the Junta de Castilla y León.

The five-hour musical program featured performances by Héctor Calderón, Iván Ferreiro, and Sexy Zebras. The local Palencia DJ Héctor Calderón kicked off the evening at 21:00 and also closed the night’s events. Iván Ferreiro took the stage at 22:00 as part of his “Hoy x Ayer” tour, marking 35 years in the music industry. Rock band Sexy Zebras followed at midnight with their “El Tour Bravo” production.

Logistical Shifts and Venue Adjustments

Organizers faced a last-minute venue adjustment after the Confederación Hidrográfica del Duero denied permission to use the floating stage setup that was featured during the inaugural event. According to regional authorities, the decision forced a rapid relocation of the performance area to dry land through coordination between the regional government and the Aguilar de Campoo town council.

Despite the layout change, the event preserved its free-admission format aimed at promoting the natural heritage of the Palencia Mountain region. The security and operational framework involved multiple agencies, including Sacyl, Cruz Roja, Protección Civil, Guardia Civil, and the Policía Local. Free shuttle services were also deployed from Aguilar and surrounding localities to manage transit.

Regional Tourism and Economic Impact

María González Corral, the regional consejera of Environment, Housing, and Spatial Planning, visited the festival and emphasized its role in boosting local visibility. According to González Corral, the concert belongs to a broader Junta-backed initiative spanning natural areas across Castilla y León, which also included summer events in Hoyos del Espino and Riaño.

The regional official noted that these cultural events stimulate municipal economies by increasing foot traffic for local lodging, dining, and tourist services. González Corral acknowledged the cooperation of Aguilar de Campoo Mayor María José Ortega, the Diputación de Palencia, and the emergency services deployed for the event.

Festival Background and Context

The festival was originally established last year to mark the 25th anniversary of the declaration of the Montaña Palentina as a Protected Natural Space, a debut that drew an estimated 12,000 attendees. The second installment continues the regional strategy of pairing live performances with environmental conservation awareness and rural tourism promotion.
