A fast-moving forest fire in the province of Segovia forced the preventative evacuation of approximately 200 residents and prompted regional authorities to declare Level 2 on the potential gravity index, according to Junta de Castilla y León and Telemadrid reports.
The emergency coordination center, known as Cecopi, ordered the immediate evacuation of Los Ángeles de San Rafael and Vegas de Matute, while also placing the nearby locality of Valdeprados under strict confinement. According to the 1-1-2 emergency service for Castilla y León, the rapid escalation past 17:41 local time on Sunday reflected an immediate threat to human lives and non-forestry assets near the Sierra de Guadarrama region.
Emergency Shelters and Regional Response Operations
Local municipalities and emergency response teams established multiple temporary reception centers to house displaced residents. The Ayuntamiento de El Espinar opened the municipal sports hall, the Polideportivo Municipal, to accommodate evacuees from Los Ángeles de San Rafael. Simultaneously, the Ayuntamiento de Vegas de Matute directed displaced citizens to the school in Villacastín, where roughly 200 individuals received shelter managed by the Logistics Support and Emergencies Unit of the regional Civil Protection Agency alongside the Spanish Red Cross, as reported by Telemadrid.
Firefighting operations involve more than 40 combined aerial and terrestrial units deployed across the Segovia province. Additional support arrived from neighboring regions, with Madrid deploying five firefighting crews and three helicopters to assist local crews, according to Telemadrid coverage. High temperatures and shifting winds continue to complicate containment efforts near the edges of the Guadarrama National Park.
Water Supply Disruptions in El Espinar
Beyond the immediate evacuation zones, the fires in Segovia have impacted critical municipal infrastructure. A separate wildfire burning at Level 1 gravity near the locality of Revenga damaged local utility systems, according to municipal statements from El Espinar.
The fire in Revenga knocked out the pumping system connected to the Puente Alta reservoir, forcing a complete halt to the normal water delivery route for the municipality. To maintain basic service, local authorities redirected the municipal water supply to draw from the Vado de las Cabras reservoir. The El Espinar town council issued public appeals urging residents to exercise strict responsibility regarding water consumption while emergency conditions persist across the province.
