Morocco and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have agreed to accelerate the implementation of their partnership, focusing on trade, food security, and renewable energy, according to reports from Morocco World News and Assahifa. The agreement was reached on Monday during a ceremony at the ASEAN headquarters in Jakarta, where Morocco’s new ambassador to the regional bloc, Redouane Houssaini, presented his credentials to ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.
Jakarta Ceremony Formalizes New Diplomatic Momentum
During the proceedings at the ASEAN secretariat, Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn welcomed the positive trajectory of relations between Southeast Asian nations and the Kingdom, praising King Mohammed VI for his commitment to strengthening ties. According to Industries.ma, Kao stated that the regional body is fully prepared to work alongside Morocco to deepen their Sectoral Dialogue Partnership and unlock its economic potential. Officials emphasized the necessity of advancing the ASEAN-Morocco Practical Cooperation Areas framework established for 2024 through 2028.
Houssaini reaffirmed Morocco’s dedication to boosting bilateral efforts under royal directives, outlining specific sectors slated for expansion. According to Assahifa, the newly credentialed ambassador identified trade, investment, food security, sustainable agriculture, fertilizers, renewable energy, connectivity, the digital economy, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges as high-potential areas for joint development.
Connecting Southeast Asia and Africa
A central pillar of the discussions in Jakarta focused on Morocco’s geographic and economic positioning as a strategic bridge between Southeast Asia and the African continent. Ambassador Houssaini noted that the Kingdom’s established infrastructure and deep-rooted ties across Africa create viable opportunities for triangular ASEAN-Morocco-Africa cooperation, particularly in regional development and commercial exchange, as reported by Industries.ma.
The institutional framework underpinning this relationship has evolved. Morocco officially acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia in 2016, later achieving Sectoral Dialogue Partner status in September 2023 as the first North African nation to do so. Today, seven ASEAN member states maintain active diplomatic missions in Morocco, reinforcing commercial and political communication channels.
Economic Scale and Shared Principles
The reinforced partnership intersects with a rapidly expanding economic bloc. Founded in 1967, ASEAN comprises 11 member states following Timor-Leste’s admission at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025. Representing a consumer market exceeding 680 million people, the organization anchored a combined gross domestic product of approximately $4 trillion in 2024.
Beyond commerce, both sides underscored a shared diplomatic foundation rooted in state sovereignty, regional moderation, ongoing dialogue, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
