Britain has authorized Eli Lilly’s oral weight-loss pill, Foundayo, for chronic weight management and type 2 diabetes, according to an announcement by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This makes the United Kingdom the first country in Europe to green-light a daily GLP-1 tablet for both conditions, intensifying the commercial race against rival pharmaceutical major Novo Nordisk.
Regulatory Milestone and NHS Availability
The MHRA clearance establishes Foundayo as a legally approved therapeutic option in the UK, though immediate public healthcare access remains limited. According to the MHRA, the tablet is not currently available through the National Health Service (NHS), meaning patients seeking the treatment must initially rely on private healthcare channels.
A spokesperson for Eli Lilly told Reuters that Foundayo will launch in the UK later this month exclusively via private prescription. The company stated that the oral treatment will carry a lower UK list price privately than its injectable counterpart, Mounjaro, which is currently listed at £330 for a monthly supply. Precise pricing details for the new pill have not yet been disclosed.
Market Competition and European Status
Foundayo represents the second oral GLP-1 receptor agonist cleared in the UK, following the regulatory clearance secured by Novo Nordisk for its rival Wegovy pill in June, according to Global Banking and Finance review reporting. While the UK has moved ahead with full authorization, regulatory reviews remain ongoing across the broader European Union. Novo Nordisk’s oral Wegovy treatment has earned a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency, though it still awaits a final authorization decision from the European Commission.
Globally, Eli Lilly’s once-daily tablet has gained steady commercial momentum in the United States since its market launch in April, though industry figures indicate it still trails Novo Nordisk’s oral product in that specific region.
Comparing Oral Pills and Injectable Therapies
The broader weight-loss therapeutics market has historically been anchored by injectable treatments, such as once-weekly pens from both Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. While injectable formats maintain market leadership due to established efficacy and less frequent dosing requirements, daily oral tablets are rapidly expanding patient choice.
Foundayo’s primary differentiator centers on patient convenience. Unlike existing oral options that mandate strict intake rules, Foundayo can be taken once daily without any food or water restrictions. By contrast, rival treatments like the oral version of Wegovy require patients to swallow the pill on an empty stomach with a restricted amount of water, followed by a mandatory thirty-minute waiting period before consuming food, beverages, or other medications, according to industry reporting.
