Italian cyclist Beppe Costamagna celebrated his 92nd birthday by cycling up the Santuario di Sant’Anna di Vinadio in the Cuneese region, reaching an altitude of 2,035 meters, according to reports from ANSA. Despite suffering a broken collarbone in a bicycle crash just six weeks prior, the retired retail worker completed the demanding climb alongside friends to maintain a tradition he started on his 80th birthday.
Overcoming Injury to Reach Europe’s Highest Sanctuary
Costamagna completed the strenuous ascent just six weeks after fracturing his collarbone in a cycling accident, according to ANSA. Following a medical check-up that cleared him to resume physical activity, he gradually rebuilt his training regimen to prepare for the mountain route. Local outlet Blasting News notes that the destination stands as the highest sanctuary in Europe reachable by mechanical transport, situated in the Maritime Alps within the Piedmont region.

The route from the municipality of Vinadio features stretches with gradients exceeding 10 percent, presenting a substantial physical test for any rider. According to Blasting News, the alpine corridor is a well-known destination for both religious pilgrims and cycling enthusiasts during the summer months due to its challenging climbs and panoramic mountain views.
Upon reaching the 2,035-meter summit, Costamagna attended Mass and posed for traditional commemorative photographs with his group, as reported by ANSA. Friends and relatives subsequently gathered around a celebratory feast to mark his 92nd year.
A Longstanding Birthday Tradition
Except for a few sporadic exceptions, Costamagna has marked every birthday since turning 80 by riding up to the shrine, according to ANSA. While the ride has become an annual fixture for the Cuneo resident, this year’s journey carried heightened significance following his recent orthopedic recovery.
