Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions confirmed during a CinemaCon presentation that an R-rated animated Bloodborne movie is officially in development. According to Fextralife, the project is a collaboration with Lyrical Animation, a subsidiary of Lyrical Media, and features YouTuber Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin attached as a producer.

The announcement marks the first official movement for the Bloodborne intellectual property since the game released on PlayStation 4 in 2015, bypassing years of fan speculation regarding a potential remake or patch. According to Fextralife, Sony Pictures Chairman Sanford Panitch described the project as an “intensely faithful” adaptation designed to capture the macabre atmosphere of the source material. PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation are spearheading the production, choosing an animated format over live-action to properly render the grotesque mutations and cosmic scale of Central Yharnam without relying on a CGI-heavy live-action aesthetic.

The inclusion of Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin as a producer introduces a prominent gaming content creator to the production team. Forbes noted that while the involvement of a YouTuber drew early skepticism from portions of the fanbase accustomed to traditional Hollywood structures, McLoughlin holds a producer credit rather than a writing or directing role.

Animation Studio and Remake Context

Animation for the film is handled by Lyrical Animation rather than Sony Pictures Animation, setting the project alongside other studio efforts like the upcoming Death Stranding movie with Kojima Productions, according to Forbes. Meanwhile, Fextralife reported that long-standing rumors regarding a PlayStation 5 remake handled by Bluepoint Games stalled due to creative roadblocks involving FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki, leaving the animated film as Sony’s primary vehicle for expanding the franchise on screen.
