President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces struck the Engels airfield and a major oil refinery, both located in Russia’s Saratov region approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) from the Ukrainian border, as reported by the BBC. The Engels facility serves as a primary base for Russian strategic aviation.
Alongside the Saratov targets, Ukrainian drone operations struck an oil depot in the Kaluga region and a drone launch site in the Bryansk region. Both Ukraine and Russia have increasingly prioritized energy assets and warehouses, as the vast land front line remains largely static and diplomatic mediation efforts led by the United States yield no breakthrough.
Casualties and Interception Claims by Moscow
Russian authorities reported that eight people were killed during the overnight wave of Ukrainian strikes. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, air defense systems shot down or intercepted 635 drones across the targeted regions.
Moscow also reported another targeted strike on a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer. The recurring strikes on logistics and retail warehouses highlight the broad scope of infrastructure vulnerabilities currently facing Russian rear areas.
Black Sea Port Attacks and Kharkiv Casualties
Simultaneously, the Russian military launched overnight retaliatory attacks against two Ukrainian ports and two vessels operating in the Black Sea, according to Moscow’s military reports. The maritime strikes underscore the ongoing contest for control and commercial access in the contested waterway.
Later on Sunday, local officials in Ukraine reported that one person was killed in a separate Russian strike targeting a postal terminal near the northeastern city of Kharkiv. The postal and transport networks in eastern and northern Ukraine remain frequent targets of Russian bombardment.
