DeForest Buckner Returns to Colts Camp After Major Neck Surgery

Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner is making a gradual return to training camp. The 32-year-old underwent neck surgery on New Year’s Eve to repair a herniated disc and pinched nerve, according to the Indianapolis Star.

He spent the majority of the early 11-on-11 reps on the sidelines. Buckner described his limited initial participation as weird while expressing relief at returning to the field ahead of Week 1.

A Long Recovery From a Week 9 Injury Against Pittsburgh

Buckner sustained the injury during the Colts’ Week 9 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. The issue ultimately sidelined him for seven of the final eight games.

During the initial recovery phase, the father of three faced significant physical limitations. He noted that he struggled to lift more than 10 pounds. According to the Indianapolis Star, Buckner received medical clearance to return to on-field action just as training camp opened.

A Structured Ramp-Up Plan for the Veteran Defensive Lineman

The team has implemented a ramp-up plan for the veteran. Buckner participated in individual drills during the team’s first day in pads.

He saw his initial 11-on-11 reps during Friday’s practice, though he remained a spectator during full team action. Speaking to reporters on a Monday, Buckner stated that he hoped to resume work with the full defense on Tuesday.

Muscle Soreness and Managing the Workload Ahead of Week 1

“It’s coming along good. The neck is doing really well. Obviously, a little muscle soreness here and there as expected with the first time getting back out there, but all in all, everything’s great,” Buckner said, according to the Indianapolis Star. He added that his primary focus is gradually increasing his workload throughout camp.

Overcoming the Psychological Hurdle of Limited Participation

Buckner acknowledged the psychological hurdle of starting camp on a restricted basis.

“Just being able to be at this spot, coming into camp cleared, that was a big goal for me, and I’m just trusting the process on everything,” Buckner said, as reported by the Indianapolis Star. “It is a little weird coming in and not really doing too much.”
