Older adults living within 0.1 miles of a commercial dry cleaner face a 14 percent higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease compared to those living four to five miles away, according to a large U.S. study published in the Nature journal npj Parkinson’s Disease. Researchers evaluated data from numerous newly diagnosed Parkinson’s patients to map how urban environmental exposures near residential neighborhoods impact long-term neurological health.
How Dry Cleaner Proximity Elevates Parkinson’s Risk
Environmental exposures near residential properties play a significant role in neurological health, given that only about ten percent of Parkinson’s cases stem from direct genetic causes, according to the study authors. Researchers from the United States examined whether the physical distance to commercial dry cleaning facilities correlates with new Parkinson’s diagnoses among older populations.
To conduct the analysis, the study evaluated health data from 180,982 individuals with newly diagnosed Parkinson’s disease alongside more than 18.8 million control subjects. Every participant in the dataset was at least 67 years old. Investigators mapped the exact locations of 32,723 commercial dry cleaning facilities to calculate the precise distance between each storefront and the residential addresses of the participants.
The statistical findings demonstrate a clear distance-dependent gradient:
- Within 0.1 miles (approx. 160 meters): Residents experienced a 14 percent higher risk of a Parkinson’s diagnosis.
- Between 0.1 and 0.25 miles (160 to 400 meters): The elevated risk dropped to 11 percent.
- Between 0.25 and 0.35 miles (400 to 560 meters): The difference measured 8 percent.
Beyond these specific bands, the statistical correlation decreased steadily as the physical distance from the facilities increased. The research team controlled for confounding variables including age, sex, smoking habits, individual income levels, local medical care access, and ambient fine particulate matter pollution.
Symptom Severity and Demographic Variations
The study identified sharper statistical correlations among patients who presented with specific preexisting medical markers prior to their formal Parkinson’s diagnosis. Individuals with documented prior gait disturbances living in immediate proximity to a dry cleaner showed a 23 percent higher probability of a Parkinson’s diagnosis. Patients with a history of dementia or cognitive decline showed a 25 percent increase, while those with prior recorded falls experienced a 19 percent higher likelihood.

Study authors suggest that environmental toxins originating from these industrial sites might influence not only the baseline risk of developing the neurodegenerative condition, but also which specific clinical symptoms manifest most prominently. While previous investigations into other neurotoxins found comparable patterns, the observational research design cannot definitively prove direct causation.
The data also highlighted differences between male and female participants. While both genders exhibited an elevated risk of Parkinson’s disease when residing near dry cleaning operations, the effect was more pronounced among men, extending across wider geographic radiuses. Among women, statistically significant elevations in risk clustered primarily within the two closest proximity brackets.
