Global communities are actively reshaping their social, ecological, and economic systems to confront the escalating climate crisis through 29 localized case studies spanning 43 nations and six continents, according to Columbia University Press.

Global Tactics for Climate Justice Across Six Continents

The initiatives detailed by Columbia University Press range from Cuba and Kiribati to Iceland, the Andes, North American prairies, and the expanding Gobi Desert. These projects foreground grassroots tactics and alternative modes of practice deployed often by marginalized populations to establish more humane and hospitable environments. According to the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, the documented efforts include projects like the Plurinational Observatory of Andean Salt Flats, alongside decades of Indigenous autonomy work by the Zapatista movement in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico.

Scholarship and Design Leadership on the Climate Front Lines

The collection features dispatches from more than a dozen leading scholars in the climate justice movement, compiled under the guidance of Billy Fleming. Fleming serves as founding codirector of the Climate and Community Institute, assistant professor of landscape architecture at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture, and former urban policy advisor to the Obama administration, as noted by Columbia University Press. Contributing authors include Catherine de Almeida, Gianpaolo Baiocchi, Eliza Breder, Holly Jean Buck, Daniel Aldana Cohen, Keller Easterling, Kian Goh, Rob Holmes, Leah Kahler, Reinhold Martin, Danielle Rivera, Douglas Robb, Akira Drake Rodriguez, Matthew Seibert, Aaryaman “Sunny” Singhal, Abby Spinak, and Charles Waldheim.

Expert Perspectives on Land Stewardship and Policy

Jane Mah Hutton described the publication as a practical collection of climate action exemplars, while Julian Brave NoiseCat stated that the work places the earth and shared spaces precisely at the center of the climate crisis, according to the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. Pennsylvania State Senator Nikil Saval characterized the book as a challenge to contemporary climate policy, and Ananya Roy, Luskin Chair in Inequality and Democracy, UCLA called it a tour de force for social justice practitioners. Additional commentary from Shalanda Baker, former Director of the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy, emphasizes the book’s focus on people and their land amid powerful environmental forces.
