Medical Professionals Defend Egg Freezing at 36
Medical experts pushed back against the criticism, stating that freezing eggs at age 36 remains a medically viable and increasingly common option. Dr Carrie Bedient, a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist based in Las Vegas, told the Guardian that 36 is an appropriate age for the procedure and disputed the idea that fertility sharply declines the moment a person turns 35.
“From a success rate standpoint, egg freezing tends to be its most effective at age 35 or younger. But you do not fall off a fertility cliff when you turn 35,” Bedient said, adding that she welcomes patients at 36 and beyond. Bedient also addressed online arguments pointing out that many frozen eggs are never used, noting that a UCLA Health study found only 6% of people who froze eggs used them for IVF within seven years. She explained that low utilization rates often occur because patients ultimately achieve spontaneous pregnancies or decide not to use the stored samples.
Sidonia Buchtova, a physician’s assistant and founder of the resource site Freeze.health, emphasized the psychological benefits of the procedure. Buchtova told reporters that critics focus too heavily on statistics rather than the peace of mind, expanded options, and mental health benefits that fertility preservation provides to women.
