These foundational tools unlock new possibilities that were previously unattainable or severely limited, acting as catalysts for radical transformation across multiple industry sectors.

The core characteristic of an enabling technology is its capacity to spark widespread industrial transformation. According to Tucker Marion and John Friar in their research published by the Design Society, these innovations enable transformative shifts that would otherwise remain unviable due to barriers like lacking infrastructure, capital constraints, or regulatory hurdles.
