Bronin Surges Past 14-Term Incumbent Larson
Former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin defeated 14-term incumbent U.S. Rep. John Larson in Connecticut’s Democratic congressional primary on Tuesday, according to CBS News projections. Bronin led Larson by nearly 20 percentage points, securing a commanding margin of roughly 7,000 votes with just over half of the ballots counted by 10:15 p.m. ET.
A Generation-Defining Democratic Primary
The primary for the reliably blue Hartford-area House seat centered on a stark debate over generational change. Bronin campaigned heavily on a platform of new energy and perspectives, casting the 78-year-old Larson as a status quo candidate who had been in office since the late 1990s.
“The stakes are too high to keep doing the same thing,” Bronin told voters on his campaign website, according to CBS News.
Conventions, Cash, and High-Profile Backing
Bronin received a major boost in May when the Connecticut Democratic Party endorsed him at its state convention, an upset that prompted him to call on Larson to pass the torch. He also secured an endorsement earlier in the year from former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Financially, Bronin outpaced his rival, raising just over $3 million during the primary cycle compared to Larson’s $2.7 million.
Seniority and the Argument for Influence
Larson defended his nearly three decades in Washington by framing his seniority as a vital asset for his constituents. As one of the longest-serving House Democrats, Larson argued that his tenure guaranteed him substantial influence, including the prospect of securing a full committee chairmanship rather than starting over as a freshman.
“We are going to come in as a full committee chairman, not as some freshman in Congress with some assignment,” Larson told Hartford CBS affiliate WFSB-TV, as reported by CBS News.
The General Election Ahead
Larson also secured high-profile backing of his own, receiving on-the-ground campaign support from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. West Hartford state Rep. Jillian Gilchrest and Hartford Board of Education member Ruth Fortune also competed in the primary, trailing the two front-runners.
Having secured the Democratic nomination, Bronin will advance to the general election to face Republican nominee Amy Chai, who ran for her party’s nomination unopposed.
