Women’s sports consumed 28.6 billion minutes in the first half of the year, marking an 18% increase over 2025’s data according to a Nielsen report.
Viewership Milestones Across Major Leagues and Tournaments
According to Nielsen’s “Women & Sports” report, audience engagement has scaled significantly across multiple disciplines. The 2026 WNBA season recorded 3.8 billion minutes consumed by fans, keeping the league on pace to surpass last year’s mark and become the most-watched season ever. In college athletics, UCLA’s victory over South Carolina in the women’s basketball title game drew 9.9 million viewers, making it the third most-watched women’s college basketball game on record, with 21 NCAA Tournament games topping 1 million viewers each.
Other properties have hit distinct historical marks. The 2026 Women’s College World Series reached 30.7 million unique viewers—a 54% year-over-year increase—making it the most watched softball tournament ever, according to Nielsen data. ESPN secured eight slots in the Nielsen Top 25 ratings during that span. Meanwhile, the gold medal game for women’s hockey at the Winter Olympics averaged 5.3 million viewers on USA Network, peaking at 7.7 million. In tennis, the 2026 Wimbledon final between Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova averaged 1.9 million viewers on ESPN, delivering ESPN’s most-watched women’s championship match for the tournament.
“The rise in popularity of women’s sports isn’t just a fleeting trend; it is a cultural re-alignment where access to games, storytelling around athletes and ongoing investment from brands are changing the economy and energy of global sports,” said Charlene Polite Corley, Vice President of Inclusive Insights for Nielsen, in the report.
Commercial Growth and Rising Sponsor Valuations
This viewership momentum translates directly to financial backing. Nielsen reports a 120% increase in advertising spending on women’s sports since 2022. Commercial viability is further evidenced by rising sponsor valuations across leagues. According to Nielsen’s analysis, the WNBA has experienced a 71% increase in sponsor valuations, the NWSL an 82% surge, and the LPGA a 51% gain.
Broadcast milestones underscore this commercial expansion. The 2025 NWSL championship broadcast on CBS drew an average audience of 1.18 million, marking the first broadcast in league history to surpass one million viewers. Additionally, ESPN’s coverage of the 2025 NCAA women’s volleyball tournament grew 13% year-over-year, averaging 667,000 viewers.
Shifting Demographics in Sports Consumption
Beyond dedicated followers of women’s leagues, Nielsen’s report highlights broader demographic shifts in sports fandom. Women are increasingly engaging with traditional men’s sports categories. For instance, women account for 46% of NASCAR fans. Of the 7.4 million people who tuned into the 2026 Daytona 500, 2.7 million were women, according to Nielsen data.

With more than 122 million Americans—representing over half the population—showing interest in women’s sports, leagues and broadcasters continue to adjust distribution strategies to meet growing demand.
