According to MLB Trade Rumors reporting from Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times, Emerson wore a golden sombrero during a loss to the New York Yankees, pushing his strikeout rate to 34.4% in his first 68 big league games. The Mariners made the roster adjustment following a 1-0 victory over the Yankees on Thursday afternoon, selecting the contract of Triple-A infielder Brock Rodden in a corresponding move.
Contract History and Roster Context
The Mariners signed Emerson to an eight-year, $95 million extension in March, representing the largest contract ever signed by a player who had yet to reach the Major Leagues. Seattle initially kept him in the minor leagues before promoting him on May 17 to fill a roster spot left by utility infielder Brendan Donovan.
Donovan missed nearly three months due to a left groin muscle strain.
