Boomtown festival in Hampshire has become the first live music event in the UK to power a main stage entirely using UK-produced green hydrogen, according to festival organisers.
The Engineering Behind the HydroXL Arena
The stage, named HydroXL, relies on advanced generators that create electricity via hydrogen fuel cells and self-charging Hydrogen Power Unit (HPU) batteries, according to event details reported by BBC News. This configuration yields water and heat as its only by-products, eliminating carbon emissions, noxious fumes, and the heavy diesel noise typically associated with festival power grids.
Stepping Up From Trial Runs to Main Stage
Ruby Handy, the festival’s operations manager, noted the strategic push behind the build. According to Handy, the team started small last year by working with a hydrogen company on a lower-capacity setup before doubling their efforts for a main stage deployment.
“This is brand-new technology for the festival industry so we started smaller, we found it worked,” Handy told the BBC. “Now we have doubled our efforts with it being a main stage. This is an industry first and we are really keen to pioneer the use of hydrogen as a source of energy in the industry.”
Accommodating Crowds of 20,000 Music Fans
The HydroXL arena is engineered to hold up to 20,000 people and serves as the central venue for opening and closing ceremonies, according to the official Boomtown Fair site. Following a trial run, organisers scaled up the hardware to match the physical scale of the electronic dance music artists performing during the multi-day event.
Building a Blueprint for Sustainable Live Music
Engineering teams, programmers, and hydrogen fuel cell providers collaborated on the build as part of the festival’s broader structural overhaul. Organisers position the deployment not merely as a temporary trial, but as a functional blueprint for sustainable power generation across the wider live music industry.
