Integrity in public administration remains a core prerequisite for driving Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign and achieving long-term economic stability, according to Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

As Nigeria pursues stronger institutions and renewed public confidence, the ICPC is redefining the fight against corruption to focus heavily on protecting public resources and improving governance, according to an address delivered by Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu at the 4th Economic Confidential Lecture and 6th National Spokespersons Awards in Abuja, as reported by Prime Time News. Dr. Aliyu emphasized that integrity directly impacts economic performance, noting that robust institutional frameworks prevent waste and ensure government investments yield tangible development outcomes for citizens.

Preventative measures form a central pillar of the Commission’s current strategy. Rather than relying solely on investigation, prosecution, and asset recovery, the ICPC utilizes tools such as the Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard, Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units, System Studies and Reviews, Corruption Risk Assessments, and targeted project tracking initiatives to identify institutional vulnerabilities and close loopholes before financial infractions occur.

Project Tracking and Asset Recovery Metrics

The economic impact of the ICPC’s preventative stance is reflected in its oversight of public projects. Between 2023 and June 2026, the Commission tracked 4,582 public projects valued at over ₦22.53 trillion, according to data cited in coverage of the Abuja event. These tracking interventions facilitated the return of projects worth ₦507.04 billion to sites and generated estimated government savings of ₦385.62 billion.

Enforcement efforts have similarly targeted the restoration of economic value to society through asset recovery. According to the same reporting, the ICPC secured the forfeiture of properties valued at over ₦5 billion alongside a court directive instructing the completion of 962 housing units for citizens in a Federal Mortgage Bank case. Additionally, investigations into the 2024 Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) payroll fraud resulted in the final forfeiture of over ₦941.9 million to strengthen fiscal discipline.

Institutional Reforms and Effective Communication in Governance

Beyond physical infrastructure and asset forfeiture, the Commission has deployed Corruption Risk Assessments in critical operational sectors, including maritime ports, to identify procedural vulnerabilities and reduce administrative discretion.

Effective public communication remains integral to these anti-corruption efforts. The ICPC emphasizes the need for factual, credible public enlightenment campaigns connected to visible outcomes, such as completed infrastructure and recovered assets, to counter social media misinformation and ensure citizens understand reporting mechanisms.
