Philosopher Peter Singer argued in a recent interview with The Guardian that capitalism remains the most productive economic system ever created, despite its profound inequalities and environmental costs. Speaking with journalist Emma Brockes, the utilitarian thinker and bioethicist addressed the ongoing debate surrounding wealth distribution, global poverty, and climate change.

Singer stated that market economies have generated unprecedented wealth and lifted millions of people out of extreme poverty over the past several decades. According to World Bank data cited in broader economic analyses, extreme poverty rates have dropped significantly since the late 20th century, largely driven by market-based growth in developing nations like China and India. Singer emphasized that abandoning productive economic models entirely could risk reversing these historic gains in human welfare.
Addressing Inequality and Climate Change
At the same time, Singer acknowledged that capitalist structures fail to properly price environmental degradation and externalized costs, such as carbon emissions. According to his philosophical framework, utilitarianism requires societies to maximize overall well-being, which necessitates heavy regulation and carbon taxation to curb climate change. Without government intervention and redistribution mechanisms, Singer noted, free markets naturally concentrate wealth and exacerbate social divisions.

Known for his seminal 1971 essay “Famine, Affluence, and Morality,” Singer has long argued that affluent individuals have a moral obligation to donate a significant portion of their income to effective charities. In his discussion with The Guardian, he maintained that philanthropy alone cannot fix systemic economic flaws. Instead, he advocated for robust social safety nets and progressive taxation to ensure that the massive productivity of capitalism benefits the broader population rather than a small elite.
