Netflix star Chase Stokes saved his Outer Banks co-star Madison Bailey from drowning during a challenging underwater filming sequence in Barbados, according to interviews published in August 2026. The incident occurred while the cast was shooting a water scene for the fifth and final season of the hit teen drama series.
On-Set Water Rescue During Filming
According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the near-drowning happened while the actors were treading water prior to a director’s call for action. The sequence involved a script beat where character JJ, played by Rudy Pankow, is knocked off a boat and rendered unconscious in the water, with Bailey’s character, Kiara, holding him afloat.
Stokes recalled noticing that he could no longer see Bailey’s face amidst the choppy water conditions. “I was like, ‘Oh no, Bails has been under there for a while,'” Stokes told Page Six. “So I jumped off the boat and I realized that she was not able to breathe underwater.”
Communication Barriers and Crew Confusion
Both actors noted that communication in the water was exceptionally difficult. When Stokes intervened, members of the production crew initially assumed the struggle was part of the scripted performance or spontaneous improvisation.
“Everyone thought it was like, ‘Oh, wow, they’re in the scene. This is crazy,'” Stokes explained to Entertainment Weekly. He immediately alerted the crew, shouting, “No, she’s drowning.”
Bailey confirmed the severity of the situation, explaining that she struggled to swim closer to the boat and was unable to draw breath. “I was drowning,” Bailey told Page Six, adding with a laugh that crew members initially praised her commitment to the role, thinking, “Wow, she’s really good.”
Physical Demands of Outer Banks Season 5
The fifth and final season of Outer Banks premiered on Netflix on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Stokes identified the extensive underwater work across the show’s five seasons as the most challenging physical requirement of his tenure on the series, which follows a tight-knit group of teenagers in coastal North Carolina.

Bailey echoed those sentiments, noting that underwater sequences presented her biggest hurdle on set. Despite the dangerous moment, Bailey lightened the mood during the press tour by joking about Stokes’ swimming proficiency compared to her own struggles in the water.
“You actually make a bad day worse,” Bailey joked to Entertainment Weekly. “When I’m struggling to barely swim, Chase is like [fake swims]. I swear he’s breathing under there just to make me look bad.”
