According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung is projected to recapture the number one spot in the global smartphone market in 2026, overtaking Apple despite ongoing memory semiconductor supply shortages and soaring component costs. The market rebound follows a prolonged period of contraction across the sector as hardware makers grapple with pricing pressures and shifting consumer demand.

Global Smartphone Market Downturn and Projections

Global smartphone shipments are projected to drop by 14.3% year-over-year in 2026 due to a severe memory semiconductor supply crunch, according to data published by the Singapore Business Times. Market analysts anticipate that the broader industry will endure continued negative growth through 2027 before staging a recovery in 2028. Component price spikes have hit various manufacturers unevenly, with budget and mid-range brands facing the steepest declines. Brands heavily reliant on price-sensitive consumer segments could experience shipment contractions of up to 34%, according to Counterpoint figures.

Samsung Supply Chain Advantages and Apple Outlook

Despite the broader market slump, Samsung is positioned to post a 0.8% increase in annual smartphone shipments. Counterpoint Research attributes this resilience to Samsung’s vertically integrated supply chain, diversified product portfolio, and robust telecommunication carrier relationships. Apple possesses comparable insulation against rising component expenses due to its own supply chain controls, but researchers have adopted a more conservative shipment outlook for the Cupertino-based company.

Huawei Growth and Industry Consolidation

Huawei stands out as one of the few major manufacturers maintaining meaningful shipment growth, having developed independent component channels to counter United States trade restrictions. Meanwhile, aggressive market contraction is accelerating industry consolidation. According to Counterpoint Senior Analyst Wang Yang, the current down-cycle places severe operational pressure on Chinese budget competitors while strengthening well-capitalized firms with proprietary manufacturing ecosystems.
