Disney and Pixar have officially set a June 18, 2028, theatrical release date for Incredibles 3, offering fans their first look at concept art during the D23 fan event in Anaheim, according to reporting by The Hollywood Reporter. The upcoming threequel picks up just a few weeks after the events of Incredibles 2, shifting the narrative focus squarely onto the superhero children and their evolving powers.
The Incredible Family Takes Center Stage
Pixar’s Pete Docter stated at the D23 presentation that Incredibles 3 will round out the family’s trilogy, noting that it’s the kids’ turn to take the spotlight, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Violet and Dash are determined to step out on their own, creating tension with their parents, while baby Jack-Jack’s powers become increasingly difficult to control as he grows. According to Collider, the family will face off against a supervillain wielding more powers than the entire family combined.
Concept art debuted at the event depicts Mr. Incredible lifting an enormous object with his prodigious strength, wearing his classic blue-and-black ensemble from the era before superheroes were banned in the opening scenes of the original 2004 film, as noted by Collider. Superheroes are once again operating legally and out in the open following the events of the second film, where a well-meaning entrepreneur brought them back into the light.
Production Shift and Creative Team
While Brad Bird wrote the screenplays for and directed the first two films—which earned a combined $1.8 billion at the box office and secured a Best Animated Film Oscar for the original—he is stepping down from directing duties for the threequel due to commitments to his Netflix animated sci-fi project Ray Gunn, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Collider. Bird remains involved as a writer and executive producer.
Peter Sohn, director of Elemental and The Good Dinosaur, has taken over as director for Incredibles 3. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sohn has worked on every one of Bird’s animated movies up to Ray Gunn and was specifically chosen to carry the franchise torch by Bird and Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter after being mentored by Bird.
Returning Voice Cast and Franchise History
Franchise stars Craig T. Jackson, and Sarah Vowell are confirmed to lead the voice cast once again, reprising their roles as Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible), Helen Parr (Elastigirl), Frozone, and Violet Parr, respectively, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Collider. Brad Bird is also set to return as the voice of imperious fashion designer Edna Mode.
The original 2004 film established the universe of the Parr family, who were forced to hide their abilities following a government mandate prompted by a bevy of lawsuits, as detailed by Collider. With the third installment scheduled for June 18, 2028, Pixar continues to expand its slate of major sequels, having also used the D23 showcase to tease projects like Coco 2.
