British tennis player Jack Draper faced another difficult setback at the Cincinnati Open, falling to Martin Landaluce 3-6, 5-7 in the opening round of the tournament. Despite holding a 5-2 lead in the second set and securing an opportunity to force a decisive third set, Draper was unable to close out the match. A series of mental lapses allowed Landaluce to claim five consecutive games and eliminate the British competitor from the event.
The early exit extends a challenging stretch for Draper, whose recent trajectory has been heavily impacted by physical struggles and wrist injuries. After withdrawing from Wimbledon, the 24-year-old returned to action at the Canadian Open, where he suffered another first-round defeat against Terence Atmane. Following that match, emotional reactions on the court highlighted the heavy psychological pressure resting on the former world number 4.
Ranking Decline and Physical Struggles
Draper’s early losses in Montreal and Cincinnati have contributed to a significant drop in the standings, moving him from world number 4 down to world number 143. This sharp descent comes after his run to the semifinals of the 2024 US Open. Addressing his current form, Draper acknowledged the physical and competitive gap he is working to close.
“On the court, I was not in my old form, from the way I fought for every shot to the way I controlled the match and myself,” Draper said following the Cincinnati defeat.
Reflecting on the reality of his ranking drop, Draper added that “looking at the drop in my ranking compared to last year and the things I need to change in my game… the challenge ahead feels huge.”
Preparations for the US Open
With the US Open scheduled to begin on August 30, Draper faces a race against time to recover his peak form, physical resilience, and on-court confidence. Because of his current position at number 143 in the rankings, the British number one may be forced to navigate the qualifying rounds at Flushing Meadows to secure a spot in the main draw.
Draper’s immediate priority remains regaining the explosive form and confidence that established him among the sport’s rising talents before persistent wrist issues interrupted his momentum.
