Mark Cuban has officially dropped his legal petition against Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont, ending a court dispute over the team’s arena development plans, according to a report by Christian Clark of The Athletic.

Mark Cuban Drops Rule-202 Petition Against Patrick Dumont

Legal counsel for 68-year-old Mark Cuban withdrew the Rule-202 petition this week, just over a month after filing the action in late January, according to reporting by Christian Clark of The Athletic. The legal filing originally sought to compel depositions regarding the Dallas Mavericks’ ongoing efforts to develop a new arena within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Cuban maintained in the court filing that Dumont blocked him from potential business opportunities tied to the arena project while employing confrontational business practices. Cuban continues to hold a 27 percent minority ownership stake in the NBA franchise.

Ownership Transition and Strained Franchise Dynamics

Cuban held majority control of the Mavericks from 2000 until December 2023, when he sold his controlling stake to Dumont and Miriam Adelson. According to reporting from The Athletic, tensions between the former and current leadership escalated following Cuban’s exclusion from key decision-making processes during the team’s 2025 trade strategy regarding star guard Luka Doncic. Despite dismissing the recent court action, public friction between the two stakeholders persists, compounded by Cuban’s recent public statements expressing regret over relinquishing his majority control of the team to Dumont and Adelson.
