ChatGPT can now read, search, draft, and send Apple iMessages directly from a Mac computer, according to an update announced by OpenAI. The new integration allows the artificial intelligence chatbot to interact with system messaging tools, though the feature is currently restricted to macOS desktop applications running on Apple silicon hardware.

How the ChatGPT iMessage Plugin Works on Mac

According to MacRumors, users can install the Apple Messages plugin directly from the ChatGPT Plugins interface under the public listing category. To function properly on a Mac, the integration requires specific system permissions, including Full Disk Access in macOS System Settings, along with access to contact names and automation tools. The plugin utilizes AppleScript and Accessibility settings to operate across the desktop environment.

OpenAI noted that the tool supports iMessages, SMS messages, and RCS messages. By default, sending a message requires user approval, and OpenAI explicitly warns users against granting persistent approval for automated message dispatch. USA Today reported that users can alternatively toggle settings to approve all texts drafted by the chatbot automatically.

OpenAI outlined several prompt examples for the new integration, suggesting users can ask ChatGPT to check calendars and reply to specific contacts with available meeting times, suggest follow-up responses to unread texts, detect potential spam messages, and scan text mentions for birthdays to add them directly to a calendar.

Availability and Platform Restrictions

The iMessage integration is subject to several strict platform and account limitations. According to MacRumors, the feature does not work in regular, standard ChatGPT chats. Instead, it is available exclusively within ChatGPT Work and Codex in the desktop version of ChatGPT.

Furthermore, the capability is restricted to users operating an Apple silicon Mac. The feature is unavailable on iPhones or iPads, meaning mobile users cannot direct ChatGPT to read or send text messages from iOS devices.

Broader OpenAI Platform Updates

The Mac messaging rollout coincides with several other platform updates deployed by OpenAI. According to MacRumors, the Health in ChatGPT feature, which integrates medical records and Apple Health data, is rolling out to users in the United States after a prolonged beta phase. Additionally, OpenAI made GPT-5.6 Luna the default model for Free and Go ChatGPT users, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant and providing unlimited text chats without text-based rate limits, though restrictions continue to apply for file uploads and image generation tools.
