Chilean television personality Fernando Solabarrieta publicly condemned lawyer Pablo Aqueveque as unscrupulous and opportunistic following Aqueveque’s resignation from the legal defense of Ivette Vergara, according to statements made by Solabarrieta on the program Sin Filtros. Vergara had previously been detained for reckless driving.
Dispute Over Legal Representation and Jailhouse Entry
According to Solabarrieta, he had no prior contact with Aqueveque until seeing him on television discussing Vergara’s detention. Solabarrieta stated that Aqueveque entered the jail cell where Vergara was being held overnight without notifying her family. In remarks broadcast on Sin Filtros, Solabarrieta recounted that Vergara told the lawyer she already had representation but suggested he speak with her if he wished. Solabarrieta then contacted his own attorney, Raúl Inostroza, who confirmed Aqueveque’s presence at the scene but could not explain how he obtained access to the case.
Media Appearances Spark Public Feud and Resignation
Solabarrieta stated that he called Aqueveque and asked him not to speak with the press to prevent a larger scandal. During that conversation, Aqueveque admitted that Vergara had not asked him to speak to journalists and that doing so was his own personal decision, according to Solabarrieta. The broadcaster questioned the lawyer’s motives, suggesting that Aqueveque used the situation to gain media attention rather than to defend his client. Following the incident and subsequent court appearances alongside Inostroza, Aqueveque appeared on a web program hosted by OnceStream to discuss the case, prompting severe backlash from the family and his eventual resignation.
