Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles debuted the ID. California Cruise concept at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, marking a major step toward a 100% electric camper van lineup slated for release by 2028, according to company announcements. The unveiling coincides with a manufacturing milestone: the 250,000th California van rolled out of the Hanover plant in July.

Overcoming Weight Hurdles in Electric Campers

For years, engineering an electric camper van presented a severe weight challenge. According to Volkswagen, outfitting a battery-powered camper with traditional furniture and luggage risked pushing the vehicle past the three-tonne threshold, which triggers heavy-vehicle license requirements in several European countries.

To address this mass constraint, Volkswagen partnered with lightweight modular camping startup Stuff Bubble to display an inflatable furniture concept for the California Beach. Unlike permanent cabinetry that permanently reduces payload capacity, the inflatable equipment can be completely disassembled and only adds weight when actively in use. Volkswagen stated it is using the Düsseldorf exhibition to gather visitor feedback on the inflatable gear as a potential future solution.

Alongside the electric concept, Volkswagen’s standard thermal California lineup received practical updates for the model year. Options now include an electrically operated tailgate, nighttime temperature lowering for the climate control system, and a dedicated air vent directing heat directly to the roof bed.

Powertrain Options and Model Lineup

Buyers of the traditional internal-combustion and hybrid California models can choose from three engines: a TDI diesel for long-distance driving, a TSI petrol, and the eHybrid 4MOTION plug-in hybrid. According to Volkswagen, the eHybrid delivers 180 kW of combined power, features all-wheel drive, and can power the vehicle’s stationary climate control for up to eight hours.

The broader display at Düsseldorf spans the entire Volkswagen camper family, from the compact Caddy California to the Crafter-based Grand California. For 2027, the Grand California gains optional lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, a solar power pack for off-grid autonomy, and updated interior layouts. Additionally, Volkswagen introduced two specialized packages: the design-focused California Ocean “Generation” with two-tone paint options, and an aerodynamic body kit developed with ABT Sportsline featuring a front spoiler, side skirts, rear bumper, and 20-inch wheels.
