The Idaho Transportation Department will shift southbound Interstate 15 traffic into new lanes north of Chubbuck this Sunday, according to the agency, prompting a series of weekend ramp closures and construction delays.

Weekend Traffic Shifts and Ramp Closures on I-15

Motorists traveling through the area can expect significant adjustments as construction crews connect existing ramps to the newly constructed lanes. According to the Idaho Transportation Department, traffic will shift from north of the 2 ½ Mile Road Bridge down to the Chubbuck Road Bridge. To facilitate this transition, intermittent nighttime lane closures will take place on I-15 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday nights.

Specific ramp closures will impact the Northgate Interchange, designated as Exit 73, during the operations. Southbound ramps at Exit 73 will close from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday evening. Drivers utilizing the southbound off-ramp must detour to the Chubbuck Interchange at Exit 61, while southbound on-ramp users will need to route through the Chubbuck and Pocatello Creek Road interchanges at Exits 61 and 71, according to transportation officials.

Construction Timeline and Safety Measures

Throughout the construction phases, daytime driving conditions will maintain two open lanes in each direction, though nighttime speed limits drop to 55 miles per hour within the work zone. The Idaho Transportation Department emphasizes that safety remains the top priority for both motorists and construction crews. Drivers are advised to stay alert for sudden traffic pattern changes, adhere to posted work zone signage, and check 511.idaho.gov in advance to plan alternative routes and monitor potential delays.
