The incident occurred on the Fujinomiya trail, where mountain weather conditions can change rapidly and create severe risks for stranded hikers.

Discovery at the Fujinomiya Trail Refuge

According to reports corroborated by AGI, the seven-year-old boy was found at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time on Thursday near the sixth station of the Fujinomiya trail. Staff members at a mountain refuge discovered the child sitting alone on a bench in the fog and rain at an altitude exceeding duemila metri. The boy had been left behind with just a beverage and a snack after telling his father that he was too tired to keep walking.

The father had instructed the boy to wait there while he proceeded up the mountain with his older son. Police accounts highlighted that the child remained unattended for several hours before refuge workers intervened, assisted him, and alerted law enforcement.

Police Confrontation and Apology on Mount Fuji

Prefectural police officers tracked down the 48-year-old father higher up the mountain between the seventh and eighth stations, roughly a three-hour climb away from where he had left the child. When the father and son were finally reunited after approximately eight hours, the boy was completely exhausted, as noted by Sky TG24.

Officers reprimanded the man sharply for his actions. According to AGI, an officer told the father, “Even if that means having to give up climbing the mountain together, leaving a child behind is unacceptable.” The father subsequently admitted to police that his choice was “rash” and offered an apology for abandoning the child on the trail.

Environmental Risks on the UNESCO World Heritage Volcano

Rising to 3.776 metri, Mount Fuji is an active volcano located southwest of Tokyo that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2013. The peak attracts roughly 200.000 climbers annually, but local authorities frequently respond to emergencies along its routes.

Media reports from Japan Today and AGI emphasized that summer excursions on the mountain carry significant hazards. Rapid shifts in weather—including sudden rain, dense fog, and plunging temperatures—can trigger hypothermia even during warmer months. The Fujinomiya route starts at the fifth station, typically requiring about five hours of ascent to reach the summit and another three hours for the descent.
