Marriott International will open its first urban Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Shanghai by 2030, transforming an ultra-exclusive resort brand into a skyscraper-anchored property inside a 480-meter tower on the North Bund waterfront. According to company announcements, the 110-room hotel will occupy a 103-story mixed-use development, marking a strategic shift for a brand previously limited to remote natural sanctuaries.

Building a Landmark on the North Bund

The project is being developed alongside Shanghai SIIC North Bund New Landmark Construction and Development Co., Ltd. Backed by the SIIC group and Shanghai Chengtou, the towering mixed-use scheme aims to reinforce the North Bund as a cultural, commercial, and tourism destination along the Huangpu River.

Huang Haiping, vice president of SIIC Group and chairman of the development entity, stated that the vision is to establish a world-class landmark supporting Shanghai’s global profile.

From Secluded Retreats to the Skyline

Until now, the Ritz-Carlton Reserve portfolio has consisted entirely of secluded retreats across nine global locations, including Thailand, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Indonesia, Japan, China’s Rissai Valley, and Saudi Arabia.

Tina Edmundson, president of luxury at Marriott International, noted that the urban debut will translate the brand’s emphasis on personalized service and cultural immersion into a major global gateway city.

Inside the 110-Room Tower Property

The tightly curated property will feature 110 guest rooms and suites—including a dedicated suite collection and a Presidential Suite—with many offering views of the Bund and the Huangpu River. Amenities outlined in development plans include a signature restaurant, Chinese culinary spaces, a lobby lounge, a bar, an indoor pool, a fitness center, and a dedicated wellness space.

A Milestone for Marriott’s Luxury Portfolio

According to company statements, the opening of the North Bund property will make Shanghai the sole city globally to house all eight of Marriott International’s luxury brands.
