Mpox Outbreak in Guinea-Bissau: Children Make Up Half of Suspected Cases

Guinea-Bissau is facing its first-ever recorded outbreak of mpox, with children under the age of 15 accounting for half of all suspected cases in the West African nation, according to data released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The developing health situation has prompted international agencies and local health authorities to scale up surveillance and response efforts ahead of the school year.

Outbreak Scale and Vulnerability Among Children

Since the outbreak was officially declared on July 4, 2026, Guinea-Bissau has recorded seven confirmed cases of mpox, all among adults, according to the Ministry of Public Health and UNICEF figures reported on August 20, 2026. Six of those confirmed cases are located in the Autonomous Sector of Bissau, while one case is in the Biombo Region. No fatalities have been linked to the virus to date.

However, the broader pool of suspected cases highlights a significant risk to younger populations. Out of 46 total suspected cases, 23 involve children under 15. Within that group, 16 children are between zero and four years old. According to UNICEF Deputy Representative in Guinea Bissau Sandra Martins, young children face a heightened risk of developing severe complications from the virus.

“While the country’s surveillance system remains extremely fragile, we face the risk that cases are going undetected, particularly among children who are the most vulnerable to severe complications,” Sandra Martins stated.

Surveillance Gaps and Transmission Dynamics

Health officials note that the confirmed adult cases do not appear to be connected to each other. This pattern suggests undetected chains of transmission and points to the possibility that additional infections are circulating in the community without being identified.

According to UN reports, critical gaps persist in community-based surveillance, specifically regarding contact tracing, laboratory testing of samples, and tracking how the pathogen spreads. Mpox is an infectious disease belonging to the same virus family as smallpox. It primarily spreads through skin-to-skin contact with lesions, as well as through contact with contaminated items such as clothing and eating utensils.

Symptoms typically include a distinct rash, fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, and fatigue. While symptoms generally resolve without intervention and rarely lead to fatality, newborns and children remain more vulnerable to severe forms of the illness.

Response Efforts and Funding Needs

To curb the spread of the virus, UNICEF is collaborating with the Ministry of Public Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other international partners. Current response priorities include reinforcing infection prevention and control, upgrading water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities in health facilities, and expanding public awareness campaigns.

The upcoming reopening of schools in September introduces additional urgency, as classrooms increase opportunities for physical contact and potential transmission among children. Health authorities are urging families to seek immediate medical attention if a child or household member develops unexplained rashes, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.

UNICEF has indicated that more than $150,000 in flexible emergency funding is urgently required to deploy vital resources and support targeted intervention pillars across Guinea-Bissau.
