Why is Roger Federer Missing From Novak Djokovic’s New Documentary?

Tennis star Novak Djokovic is the subject of a new Prime Video documentary titled “The Wolf in Winter,” which was released on August 20. According to coverage by 20 Minuten, the film explores the 24-time Grand-Slam-winning player’s childhood in Serbia, his family’s hardships, and his path to the top of the sport. Yet, the documentary’s roster of interviewees has sparked questions among fans, particularly regarding the notable absence of longtime rival Roger Federer.

Absence of Roger Federer Raises Questions

While fellow great Rafael Nadal makes a brief appearance in the film to discuss their demanding matchups, Roger Federer does not appear as an interview partner, according to 20 Minuten. The omission is striking given that his historic rivalry with Djokovic defined an era of men’s tennis. Over their careers, Djokovic and Federer faced each other 50 times, with Djokovic claiming 27 victories, alongside a 60-match rivalry with Nadal where Djokovic earned 31 wins, as reported by 20 Minuten.

Neither the filmmakers nor official representatives have confirmed why Federer is missing from the project. According to the Serbian outlet Mondo, cited by 20 Minuten, industry speculation suggests that Federer’s heavy business and promotional commitments may complicate appearances in external productions. However, Mondo also emphasized that it remains unclear whether Federer was ever formally approached to participate in the documentary.

Director Focuses on Personality Over Big Three Lore

Rather than revisiting the familiar narrative of the “Big Three,” director Jason Hehir—known for helming the Michael Jordan documentary “The Last Dance”—chose a different angle. According to reporting by 20 Minuten, Hehir focused primarily on Djokovic’s internal world, his mental fortitude, his family sacrifices, and his response to criticism. In contrast to Federer’s absence, Rafael Nadal appears in a brief interview segment in the film, noting that facing Djokovic required 100 percent readiness, and even that level of preparation often fell short.
