An expired hygiene certificate displayed at the TopCC wholesale market in Muri BE has sparked fresh consumer concern months after the company faced a meat-labeling scandal. According to a report by the newspaper Blick, a shopper discovered that the operational hygiene certificate posted near the butcher counter had expired on April 30, 2026—suggesting the facility had not undergone formal internal quality checks for months.
Expired Hygiene Certificate Uncovered at Muri Market
Katrin M., a dental practice professional visiting the store, spotted the out-of-date document hanging on the glass partition separating the customer area from the butchery preparation space. According to Blick, the operational hygiene certificate serves as proof that a company’s internal quality assurance team has inspected the premises for compliance with sanitary and operational standards. Because the posted document carried an April 2026 expiration date, shoppers questioned whether safety protocols were slipping again at the cash-and-carry location.
Background on TopCC Meat Scandal and Inspections
The discovery revives scrutiny following a consumer fraud case uncovered in June. Investigations by Blick and Swiss broadcaster SRF’s consumer program “Kassensturz” revealed that expired meat was being re-labeled as fresh and sold to customers at the Muri branch. Food inspectors documented legal violations primarily involving charcuterie and frozen goods between April and May, prompting criminal proceedings.

At the time, a TopCC spokesperson stated that the company took the violations very seriously and introduced additional staff training. A TopCC spokesperson later stated that the company conducts at least two unannounced annual hygiene inspections per location alongside regular daily and weekly checks. However, corporate headquarters in St. Gallen admitted to Blick that it had been “versäumt” to display the current certificate in Muri. TopCC leadership assured reporters that checks remain fully up to date across all TopCC wholesale markets.
Ownership and Operations of TopCC Cash & Carry
TopCC operates as part of Spar Switzerland, which transitioned to the ownership of the Tannenwald Holding investor group in September 2025 after nine years under South African control. Established in 1967, the cash-and-carry chain employs 400 people across eleven wholesale markets. Each location features a staffed butcher counter and an inventory of 30,000 items, serving private households, restaurants, clubs, daycares, and kebab-buden operators upon presentation of a customer card.
