  • Mobbing Behavior Extension: Prey animals frequently use mobbing tactics to harass and confuse predators within a single species. Researchers theorize that humpbacks may be extending this defensive strategy broadly to weaken overall orca hunting success rates across their habitat.
  • Rudimentary Empathy: As researchers learn more about whale social structures and long-distance communication through haunting songs, some scientists propose that humpbacks possess a social drive or rudimentary empathy protecting vulnerable animals despite a lack of immediate personal benefit.
