Shamonda-like Virus Outbreak Hits Cattle in the Alps

Veterinary authorities across Western Europe are closely tracking the spread of a Shamonda-like orthobunyavirus affecting cattle herds in France, Switzerland, Germany, and Liechtenstein. According to regional surveillance reports, the vector-borne pathogen causes sudden drops in milk production, high fever, and diarrhea in dairy cows.

Geographic Spread and Initial Detection

By late July, German monitoring showed over 100 active farming clusters. The infection subsequently spread to other German states, including Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. In France, veterinary services confirmed cases in the Doubs, Jura, Ain, Savoie, and Haute-Savoie departments. Swiss cantonal veterinary services, including those in Ticino, reported symptoms compatible with the virus across 17 cantons alongside detections in the Principality of Liechtenstein. While Italian authorities in the Aosta Valley have not reported clinical cases, regional officials maintain high vigilance due to the presence of high-altitude vector populations.

Clinical Symptoms and Production Impacts

Infected dairy cattle experience a sudden onset of high fever, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and severe lethargy, according to veterinary reports. Milk yields drop dramatically, with cows producing dozens of liters daily falling to just a few liters in a short span. While herd morbidity rates in German clusters reached high levels—affecting entire herds in some instances—no fatalities have been linked directly to the virus. Clinical signs are generally transient and moderate, allowing animals to recover fully within days. However, orthobunyaviruses of the Simbu serogroup can cross the placenta, leading to potential fetal risks such as miscarriages, stillbirths, and congenital malformations depending on the stage of gestation. Swiss authorities have already detected the virus in certain aborted bovine fetuses.

Viral Classification and Vector Transmission

The pathogen is an orthobunyavirus belonging to the Simbu serogroup, sharing close clinical similarities with the Schmallenberg virus that emerged in Europe in 2011. Genome sequencing performed by the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut confirmed a strong affinity with the Shamonda virus, originally isolated in Nigeria in the 1960s. Although Shamonda has long been recognized in veterinary medicine, the variant currently circulating in Europe exhibits distinct genetic features.
