Moses Itauma and Filip Hrgovic will clash for the vacant IBF heavyweight title on 29 August at the O2 Arena in London, according to reports from The Independent. The high-stakes showdown was finalized after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the unified belts, creating a major world-title opportunity for the undefeated British contender.

The Stakes and the Title Picture

The IBF belt entered play after Oleksandr Usyk relinquished the unified championship titles. According to The Independent, the WBC heavyweight title subsequently went to Agit Kabayel and the WBA belt went to Murat Gassiev, leaving the IBF championship vacant for Itauma and Hrgovic to contest in London.

If 21-year-old Moses Itauma wins the bout, he will become the youngest world heavyweight champion since Mike Tyson, as reported by The Independent. Queensberry Promotions’ Frank Warren told the BBC that expectations remain high for the young contender, noting that the promotional team signed him at age 16 when he transitioned from the amateur ranks.

Cuban heavyweight Frank Sanchez had initially been ordered to negotiate a fight for the vacant IBF title. According to Frank Warren speaking to the BBC and cited by The Independent, Sanchez agreed to step aside on the condition that he receives a financial step-aside fee and an opportunity to face the winner of the Itauma versus Hrgovic bout.

Fighter Records and Recent Bouts

Moses Itauma enters the ring with an unblemished professional record of 14 wins and no losses, including 12 knockouts, according to The Independent. In his most recent appearance in March, Itauma secured a fifth-round stoppage victory over Jermaine Franklin, following a first-round knockout win against Dillian Whyte in August of the previous year.

Filip Hrgovic, 34, holds a record of 20 wins and one loss, with 15 knockouts. According to The Independent, Hrgovic is currently on a three-fight winning streak since suffering his sole professional defeat via stoppage against Daniel Dubois in 2024. Following that loss, Hrgovic recorded three consecutive victories against British opponents, defeating Joe Joyce and David Adeleye on points, alongside a stoppage win over Dave Allen in May.

Pre-Fight Tension and Build-Up

The matchup has featured mounting verbal sparring between the two heavyweights. According to ESPN, Filip Hrgovic stated that a title win against the young Brit would “ruin” him. In response, Moses Itauma told The Guardian that his opponent is “starting to wind me up,” setting a combative tone ahead of their August encounter at the O2 Arena.
