According to heritage assessments, landscapes designed by historic designers face environmental strains that threaten their appearances and tree species.
Climate Pressures on Historic Landscapes
At Hampton Court Palace in southwest London, long-standing lawns have turned yellow amid unremitting summer heat and low rainfall. Graham Dillamore, who has managed the grounds for over twenty years, notes that continuing severe summers will make traditional garden upkeep increasingly difficult. Historic sites such as Hampton Court, Blenheim, and Chatsworth—initially designed during the 17th century by landscape architects including Lancelot “Capability” Brown and William Kent—rank among the United Kingdom’s most popular destinations. Climate shifts now risk altering their appearances.

In west London, Chiswick House Gardens employs Rosie Files to manage roughly 1,800 trees. Files reports that oak, fig, and birch trees face extreme environmental pressure, with several specimens suffering irreversible dieback. Dillamore emphasizes that losing mature trees consecutively represents a heavy blow to the heritage value of these historic grounds. Beyond dry conditions, the gardens must contend with severe storms and heavy winter rainfall, which together foster environments where fungal pathogens and plant pests thrive.
Data from the National Lottery Heritage Fund indicates that climate change impacts are documented across all surveyed historic gardens. In certain locations, tree cover has dropped by as much as 80 percent. Furthermore, researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, project that roughly half of the institution’s trees face the risk of mortality driven by climate change by the year 2090.
Adapting Maintenance and Plant Selections
Faced with mounting environmental stress, gardens are gradually altering maintenance routines and crop selections. Several properties now prioritize drought-resistant plant varieties while expanding areas dedicated to meadows and perennial herbaceous plants. At Hampton Court, experimental flowerbeds established in April using plant cultivars native to the southern United States have thrived without regular watering.
To adapt to these novel growing conditions, garden teams have also reduced tillage and allowed more weeds to take root. Dillamore points out that while historic estates must be preserved, they must simultaneously adapt to modern climatic realities. Maintenance practices and flora choices will shift, but the gardens must retain their distinct character and inherent value.
