Uber is rolling out live video streaming for teen accounts starting August 25, allowing linked parents and guardians to monitor trips in real time through the front-facing smartphone camera of participating drivers. The update builds upon existing teen account safety features introduced in 2023, such as live GPS tracking, PIN verification, and audio recording options.
How Uber Live Video Streaming Works for Teen Rides
When an eligible trip begins, the parent or guardian linked to the teen account receives a push notification indicating that live video is available. Tapping this notification opens a live feed within the Uber app, utilizing the driver’s front-facing smartphone camera to show both the teen and the driver in real time. Ashu Manohar, director of product management at Uber, told “Good Morning America” that the feature gives parents another way to feel connected while maintaining teen independence.
Both the teenage passenger and the driver receive an in-app notification whenever a guardian tunes into the live stream. According to “Good Morning America,” the notification does not interrupt the driver’s GPS navigation or other platform alerts. The video stream automatically concludes the moment the trip is completed.
Drivers who opt in to accept underage passengers must undergo onboarding that includes guidance on positioning their phones. Drivers can also preview their camera angle using the Safety Toolkit in the Uber app when they are offline.
Uber launched teen accounts in 2023 to let minors request rides while remaining connected to a parent or guardian. The service operates in more than 50 countries, and users have completed tens of millions of trips globally.
Initial Market Rollout and Expansion Plans

Uber stated that it plans to expand the live video feature nationwide over the subsequent weeks.
Data Privacy and Encryption Standards
The live video streams are encrypted and restricted solely to the parent or guardian linked to the specific teen account. Uber cannot view the live feed while the trip is underway.
Once a ride ends, the recorded file remains encrypted and inaccessible to the driver, guardian, or teen. However, Uber confirmed to “Good Morning America” that encrypted video files are stored on company servers for a limited period of time. Manohar stated that Uber only accesses the decryption key to investigate reported safety incidents. Recordings linked to safety reports are retained according to the company’s data retention policies, while unflagged files are automatically deleted after 14 days.
The update arrives as Uber faces scrutiny regarding ridehail safety. The company is currently facing over 4,000 active sexual assault and misconduct lawsuits filed in state and federal courts by passengers. Uber requires drivers handling teen accounts to maintain top ratings and clean safety records to qualify for the trips.
