Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has dismissed pre-match tactical meetings between opposing coaches and referees as illogical, confirming plans to share a beer with All Blacks coach Dave Rennie instead “without the referee” ahead of their upcoming Test match.

Why Rassie Erasmus Avoids Joint Referee Meetings

The South African director of rugby argued that such discussions offer little value because opposing camps inevitably protect their own tactical approaches.

He explained that a coach cannot openly raise concerns about specific areas like scrum tactics or breakdown cleanouts without tipping off the opposition.

“You might say, ‘These guys really clean out well at the breakdown … will you be looking at that?’ But you can’t have that discussion in front of the referee, because then the opposition coach knows that’s what you’re looking at,” Erasmus added.

Scrum Focus and Tactical Debates

The friction over pre-match referee meetings follows intense tactical battles at the set-piece during previous encounters.

Rennie acknowledged that scrums remain a constant point of discussion and scrutiny between coaching staffs and officials. He pointed out that tactical adjustments ultimately shifted momentum in the final quarter of their previous clash.

Moving the Conversation Away From Officials

Rather than sitting down with match officials alongside their rivals, Erasmus and Rennie intend to keep their communication direct. Erasmus confirmed he plans to share a social drink directly with Rennie, cutting out the referee entirely to keep discussions straightforward and avoid circular arguments about adherence to the rulebook.

“So what do you discuss with the referee? Boys, are you going to play within the laws? The laws of the game are the laws, so it’s almost impossible,” Erasmus said.
