MLS NEXT Pro will transition from its traditional spring-to-fall schedule to a new Summer-to-Spring competition calendar starting in 2027, according to an official league announcement. The structural shift aims to align the league more closely with Major League Soccer, the FIFA International Match Calendar, and top international soccer leagues to ease player movement and global transfer market integration.
The 2027 Sprint Season Transition Bridge
To bridge the gap between the current schedule and the new format, MLS NEXT Pro will host a shortened 14-game Sprint Season running from mid-February through late April 2027, as reported by league officials.
“The Sprint Season is something we can really attack as a club, knowing it is 14 games, seven at home and seven on the road,” said Carolina Core FC Head Coach Jake Davis in the league announcement. “Fans can expect a fast start and a playoff-like feel from the very beginning of the year.”
The Sprint Season will conclude with four rounds of playoffs and the MLS NEXT Pro Cup in late May 2027. Following the final match, clubs will take a seven-to-nine-week offseason before launching the inaugural full calendar year.
The 2027–28 Summer-to-Spring Format
The first full campaign under the new schedule, designated as the 2027–28 season, will kick off in July 2027 and run through June 2028, according to league plans. Under this format, each club will play 28 regular-season matches divided into two distinct blocks.
The first half of the season is scheduled to run from mid-July through mid-December, leading into a winter break. Play will resume from early February through early May, followed by postseason playoffs that culminate in the MLS NEXT Pro Cup in early June.
Strategic Rationale and Roster Impact
League leadership views the calendar shift as a critical evolution following the 2026 FIFA World Cup and strategic financial investments, including a partnership with investment firm KKR announced earlier by the league. According to Eddie Pope, Senior Vice President of Competition and Operations for MLS NEXT Pro, the transition marks a pivotal chapter for the sport’s domestic growth.
Megan Oglesby, Principal Investor for Carolina Core FC, noted in the announcement that aligning the calendar reduces friction in player pathways and fits more effectively with stadium operations in North Carolina.
“Better aligning our calendar with the rest of the soccer world removes some of the friction from that pathway and gives our players greater access to opportunities without unnecessarily disrupting their seasons,” Oglesby stated.
