Jake Reiner Breaks Silence in First Interview Since Parents’ Murders and Brother Nick’s Arrest

Jake Reiner spoke out in his first television interview on Thursday, August 27, 2026, describing the eight months since the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, as a living nightmare. Speaking with KABC, the eldest son of the late director and producer shared the heavy emotional toll of the tragedy and his ongoing struggle to process the reality of their loss.

“Nobody really understands what it’s like to go through something like that until you’re living it,” Jake Reiner told KABC. “It’s been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time. And it also feels like eight minutes because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”

The Discovery and the Crime Scene

Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead from multiple sharp force injuries in their Los Angeles home in December. Their younger son, Nick Reiner, 32, was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of murder, along with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. According to court records, he has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Recalling the moment he learned of the tragedy, Jake Reiner described ignoring an initial call from his sister, Romy Reiner, because he was busy. When she called back immediately, he knew something was wrong. Romy told him their father was dead and that she could not find their mother, plunging him into immediate shock. Stepping onto a crime scene at his childhood home was, he noted, the most surreal experience of his life.

“For me, it manifests into anger,” Jake Reiner said during the sit-down interview. “It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened. I didn’t get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter. I just have to accept the reality of it. And to me, that is just one of the most infuriating parts of all of this.”

Family Dynamics and Public Appeal

Reflecting on his parents’ relationship with his brother, Jake Reiner stated that they held unconditional love for all three of their children—Jake, Nick, and Romy. (Rob Reiner also shared an adopted daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.) “I can tell you they never stopped wanting to help him. They never stopped helping him,” Jake Reiner said, adding that he has not spoken with Nick Reiner since the killings.

The television interview follows a public essay Jake Reiner penned for Substack in April titled “Mom and Dad,” where he first detailed the devastating impact of losing both parents simultaneously. In that essay, he urged the public to show love and compassion for his family while acknowledging that some details must remain private to protect what little remains.

The interview also arrives shortly after Los Angeles County officials released a grand jury’s formal indictment against Nick Reiner. At the time of the indictment’s release, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman issued a statement calling the case a “profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.”
