Baby boomers and older drivers in Germany are fueling the demand for sport utility vehicles, driving ownership rates significantly higher than younger demographics, according to a recent analysis by the comparison platform Verivox. The study, which evaluated auto insurance policies finalized through the platform over a 24-month period, reveals that car buyers aged 62 to 71 purchase large vehicles at rates 32 percent above the national average.
Demographic Breakdown of SUV Ownership in Germany
According to the Verivox data, the appeal of high-riding vehicles spans the older segments of the population while dropping sharply among younger motorists. Baby boomers—defined by Verivox as individuals born between 1955 and 1964—lead the market alongside retired motorists. Drivers born before 1955 also show a strong preference for the vehicle class, registering an SUV quota 29 percent above the overall average.

Conversely, younger generations are steering away from the segment. Generation Z, comprising individuals born between 1997 and 2010, records an SUV ownership rate that sits at less than half the national average. Ownership rates climb steadily with age, moving from the younger cohorts up to the peak concentrations found among retirees and baby boomers.
Financing Patterns and Vehicle Values Among SUV Owners
The financial profile of the average SUV owner reveals distinct purchasing habits compared to drivers of other vehicle classes. Data from Verivox shows that the average replacement or new value of insured SUVs runs approximately 10,600 euros higher than vehicles in other categories. Verivox attributes part of this price gap to the age of the vehicles, noting that SUVs in the dataset are on average six years younger than other cars, coinciding with a broader market trend of rising vehicle list prices.
Buyers rarely fund these purchases out of pocket. According to the analysis, SUVs are credit-financed twice as frequently and leased four and a half times more often than standard automobiles. Additionally, the homeownership rate among SUV drivers tracked by Verivox stands above the national average.
