A former chemistry teacher has been convicted of multiple counts of indecent assault against two teenage pupils at an all-boys school in north London during the late 1980s. Sally-Anne Bowen, 65, was found guilty on Thursday at Harrow Crown Court following a trial at Christ’s College in Finchley, according to the BBC.
Trial Details and Court Verdict
According to the BBC, a jury deliberated for six hours and 29 minutes before finding Bowen guilty of seven counts of indecent assault. At the time of the offenses, Bowen was in her mid-20s, while the victims were approximately 14 to 15 years old. One of the complainants testified that he had engaged in sexual activity with the teacher “about 20 or 30 times” over several months. The complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, stated that he visited Bowen at home, viewed her as his girlfriend, and believed he was in love with her. He told the court that Bowen “drummed it” into him that the relationship had to remain a strict secret.
A second complainant told jurors that he had kissed Bowen in a cafe after being pushed into doing so by other pupils. During the proceedings, Bowen, a resident of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, argued that the allegations were a “total fabrication.” She claimed she suffered from an undiagnosed medical condition during the 1980s that made sexual intercourse difficult and painful.
Classroom Testimony and Witness Accounts
Former pupils and staff members testified about unconventional classroom behavior during the trial. Tobias Oliver, a former student at Christ’s College who did not know the complainants, told the court that Bowen’s demeanor resembled that of a music video. He recalled that she “dressed and behaved more like my teenage female friends than the other teachers,” according to BBC reporting. Oliver added that classroom conversations regularly drifted from chemistry into explicit sexual topics, noting an incident where Bowen sat on a table and flashed her underwear to the class, as well as discussing a sex manual—which he believed to be the Kama Sutra—brought in by a student.
Richard Luker, who served as head of science at the school in the late 1980s, also testified. Luker told the court he received a complaint from the mother of the first victim after she grew concerned that her son planned to travel abroad with Bowen at the conclusion of the term.
Sentencing and Legal Status
Following the jury’s verdict at Harrow Crown Court, presiding officials granted Bowen bail. She is scheduled to return to the court for sentencing on November 20.
