Authorities focused their primary firefighting efforts on six vulnerable provinces with vast peatland areas: Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and Riau, as reported by the BBC.
Cross-Border Haze Impacts Malaysia and Closes Schools
Dense smoke drifted into neighboring Malaysia, heavily impacting the eastern state of Sarawak. The Sarawak government reported that one district recorded a “very unhealthy” air quality reading, while eight other areas registered “unhealthy” levels. The pollution index prompted the closure of nearly 600 schools across Sarawak, affecting approximately 200,000 students. In the small town of Serian, the Air Pollutant Index reached 195, according to regional media figures cited by the BBC. Meanwhile, Indonesian cities such as Pontianak in West Kalimantan transitioned students to online learning as thick smoke blanketed residential areas during the morning and night hours.
Government Crackdown and Legal Action Against Arson
Indonesian officials vowed immediate accountability for illegal land clearing and deliberate burning. Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni visited fire-hit areas near the provincial capital of Palangka Raya on Wednesday, promising unsparing prosecution. “Whoever they are, big or small, without exception, anyone who destroys nature and forests will face strict legal action,” Antoni stated, according to AP reporting.
