The disaster, which struck Gyirong Port in Xizang autonomous region, left at least 469 people dead in Nepal and three in Tibet, with hundreds missing, officials said Thursday.

Glacier Collapse Spurred Rapid Debris Flow

The mudslide began when a glacier on the Nepal side of the border collapsed, sending ice, rocks, and debris racing down a mountain slope. The flow, moving at 50 meters per second, transformed into a mudslide that struck Gyirong Port before continuing downstream into Nepal, according to Guo Zhaocheng, director of the China Aero Geophysical Survey and Remote Sensing Center for Natural Resources. The event affected an area more than 20 kilometers from its origin, with the speed leaving little time for evacuation, the ministry stated.

Climate Change Amplifies High-Altitude Risks

Experts linked the disaster to broader environmental shifts. Du Jun, director of the Xizang regional meteorological bureau, noted that global warming is altering glaciers, permafrost, and snowfall patterns, increasing the frequency and complexity of high-altitude disasters. “Glacier retreat expands glacial lakes, raising the risk of outburst floods, while meltwater intensifies erosion and debris transport,” he said, citing data showing the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau warmed 0.37°C per decade from 1961 to 2022—faster than global averages.

Challenges in Early Warning Systems

Kang Shichang, director of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlighted the difficulty of predicting such events in remote Himalayan regions. “If an ice-rock avalanche is detected upstream, communities downstream could get 20 minutes of warning,” he said. However, the disaster occurred in an area with limited monitoring infrastructure, and floodwaters reached the border rapidly, reducing response time, Kang added.

International Response and Evacuations

China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed preliminary assessments from both countries aligning on the glacier collapse as the trigger. Spokesperson Lin Jian stated that over 1,000 people, including 555 tourists, had been evacuated from Gyirong County, with no stranded visitors remaining, according to the state-run Global Times. President Xi Jinping extended condolences to Nepal’s leader, while Chinese officials pledged emergency aid and international cooperation to assist in search and rescue efforts.
