Emily Hardaker, a 34-year-old personal trainer from Brislington, Bristol, underwent a preventative double mastectomy after testing positive for a BRCA2 gene mutation, according to BBC coverage. Hardaker made the decision following the death of her mother from breast cancer when Hardaker was 14 years old.

The Impact of Family Medical History and BRCA2 Testing

Breast cancer shaped much of Hardaker’s childhood, as her mother was diagnosed at age 40 and died eight years later, according to published reports. Hardaker recalled that her mother was frequently unwell and frail during her upbringing. In 2016, Hardaker’s sister tested positive for a faulty BRCA2 gene, which prompted Hardaker to undergo genetic testing herself in 2017 at the age of 25.

According to Cancer Research data cited in news reports, approximately seven in every 10 women with a mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes will develop breast cancer by the age of 80. These genes normally act as tumor suppressors by repairing damaged DNA, but harmful mutations significantly increase the risk of breast, ovarian, and other cancers.

Waiting Period and Surgical Decisions

Hardaker described the heavy emotional burden of carrying the diagnosis for years, noting an immediate sense of relief once the procedure was completed.

Alongside the mastectomy, Hardaker chose to undergo immediate breast reconstruction surgery. She stated that losing her natural breasts felt like losing her womanhood, but reconstruction helped her cope with the transition. Following the operation, her estimated lifetime risk of developing breast cancer dropped from an initial 80% to 90% down to approximately 8%, according to her statements reported by the BBC.

Recovery and Return to Fitness Coaching

The physical recovery proved challenging; Hardaker reported being unable to sleep flat for a month and needing time to adjust to the physical reality of the amputation. Three weeks after the surgery, she returned to her work as a personal trainer at Sweatbox gym in Bedminster.
