The Shin Bet released a formal statement on Saturday clarifying the circumstances behind Yair Netanyahu’s sudden departure from the United States. “There was indeed a significant threat to harm Yair Netanyahu, and in light of this, following a situation assessment, a decision was made to extract him together with his security team urgently back to Israel,” the agency stated, as reported by The Jerusalem Post.
Initial reports of the plot emerged on Tuesday via the Boca Raton-based Newsmax website, which cited an American law enforcement source familiar with the matter. According to those details, Israeli intelligence discovered the Iranian assassination plot in December.
Following the discovery, American authorities received immediate notifications. Yair Netanyahu, who travels continuously with a close Israeli security detail, received instructions to leave the location immediately. Reports indicate he departed rapidly, leaving his personal belongings behind, and returned directly to Israel under heavy protection.
Prime Minister’s Previous Revelations on Family Threats
The official confirmation from the Shin Bet follows public remarks made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding security dangers facing his household. Speaking last week in an interview with Channel 14, the prime minister disclosed that Iran had attempted to assassinate one of his sons, though he did not initially specify whether the target was Yair or Avner.
“There is something here that is unimaginable,” Benjamin Netanyahu said during the interview. “Iran marked one of my sons. Iran tried to murder him – tried to murder one of my sons.”
