Critic and Yale University professor Francesco Casetti has joined the official competition jury for the Venice International Film Festival, bringing a distinct theoretical lens to the Lido panel. Chaired by actress and director Maggie Gyllenhaal, the jury is tasked with evaluating 21 feature-length films and documentaries in the main competition to determine the winner of the prestigious Golden Lion.
Francesco Casetti’s Role on the Venice Film Festival Jury
After a distinguished teaching career in Italy, Casetti currently serves as a professor at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. His professional background also includes serving as president of the Consulta Universitaria Cinema across terms from 1998 to 2002 and again from 2007 to 2010.
In an interview with the Consulta Universitaria Cinema, Casetti addressed his appointment and the specific perspective a film theorist brings to a major international festival. “I hope that the presence of a film theorist on this jury serves to ask the right questions,” Casetti stated. He further emphasized the broader mission of film scholarship, noting that while researchers must discover archives, unearth documents, and read films originally, “perhaps the ultimate role of a scientific community is to ask the right questions.”
