A data center facility operated by Athlon BT in El Reno, Oklahoma, was identified by municipal officials as the source of a water line failure that drained millions of gallons and forced the temporary closure of local schools earlier in the week, according to documents obtained from the city of El Reno.
The facility utilizes shipping containers to house mobile data centers equipped with specialized air- and water-cooling technology designed for AI storage and cryptocurrency mining operations.
Infrastructure Failure Sparks Community Anxiety
Following the infrastructure failure, city inspectors investigated the property and uncovered numerous safety and code infractions. According to city documents, the site faces citations for dangerous structures, drainage issues, expired building permits, and a complete lack of a final certificate of occupancy.
Local resident Shellie Seale voiced broader community anxieties regarding the rapid expansion of such industrial computing operations.
“I don’t think people understand the impact these data centers are gonna have on where you get your food, the farms, the ranches; they’re going to be gone,” Seale said to local reporters.
